Introduction

Why water is the quieter half of the climate conversation — and what H2Oversight sets out to fix.

H2Oversight makes corporate water performance easier for the public to examine. By presenting water sustainability information in a clearer and more comparable way, the website gives consumers a stronger basis for deciding which businesses to support and gives companies stronger incentives to improve their water management and disclosure. Better corporate decisions can then reduce pressure on the communities and ecosystems that depend on the same water resources.

Water is essential to nearly every major industry, and corporate demand often draws from the same rivers, aquifers, and public systems that support surrounding communities. Yet corporate water disclosures remain difficult to compare. Companies use different definitions, units, reporting boundaries, and measures of performance, making it harder to understand how their water practices differ.

H2Oversight analyzes water sustainability data from 125 corporations through a common framework focused on three questions. How much water does a company use, how efficiently does it use that water, and how much of its water demand occurs in water-stressed regions. The analysis also identifies impactful stewardship projects and recurring gaps in corporate disclosure.

By reducing these information gaps, H2Oversight aims to strengthen accountability across consumers, companies, policymakers, and other institutions that shape corporate behavior. The goal is not only to make water data easier to understand, but also to encourage better reporting, stronger water stewardship, and more informed economic decisions.
