Water dependencyHigh

Advanced Micro Devices is a U.S.-based semiconductor company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. The company designs central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), adaptive computing products, and data center chips. Because of its fabless business model, AMD's largest water impact comes from its manufacturing suppliers, especially wafer foundries.

AMD implemented supplier-focused initiatives to reduce water use in wafer manufacturing. In 2024, total water consumption for AMD wafer production dropped 12% from 2023, a reduction of 1.5 billion liters. Wafer manufacturing water use was about 12.5 billion liters in 2023 and 11.0 billion liters in 2024.

A major driver was recycled water use by fabs producing wafers for AMD. In 2024, these fabs used 26 billion liters of recycled water. The report credits much of this progress to TSMC's reclaimed water plant in Southern Taiwan Science Park, which began supplying water at volume in 2023. AMD also reduced treated municipal water demand in its own operations. In 2024, the company used harvested rainwater in Austin and reused gray water at facilities in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. These measures cut treated municipal water demand by about 30 million liters.

AMD manages water risk through supplier assessment. The company works with direct wafer foundry suppliers to understand water risks where AMD products are made. It also uses third-party risk data, including the World Resources Institute Water Stress Index, to evaluate supplier locations.

3 Key Metrics of Advanced Micro Devices, 2024

Total water use / consumption / withdrawal
267 million liters of withdrawal across AMD's global operations.
Water intensity
0.01 million liters per million U.S. dollars of revenue.
Water-stressed region exposure
Not reported. AMD discusses supplier water risk and uses the WRI Water Stress Index, but it does not provide a percentage or volume of water use in water-stressed regions.

Supplemental metrics

Water recycled/reused
26 billion liters of recycled water were used by fabs producing wafers for AMD in 2024. AMD also used harvested rainwater in Austin and reused gray water in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
Wastewater discharge
37 million liters in 2024. Austin accounted for 25 million liters, and Longmont accounted for 12 million liters.
Project-level water savings
AMD reduced treated municipal water demand by about 30 million liters through rainwater harvesting and gray water reuse. Supplier wafer manufacturing water use decreased by 1.5 billion liters from 2023 to 2024.
