Baker Hughes Co.

Water dependencyLow

Baker Hughes Co. is a global energy technology company that offers equipment, services, and other industrial technologies for customers involved in energy, manufacturing, and other industries. While it has a relatively low water footprint compared to larger oil and gas producers, water is a less important issue across all business areas, such as manufacturing, equipment testing, chemical transfer, wastewater management, and operations in water-stressed regions.

In Mexico, Baker Hughes implemented a large water management project in 2025, installing a closed-loop treatment plant at its Ciudad del Carmen facility, eliminating the need to dispose of 960 cubic meters of wastewater from the wash bay each year and eliminating the use of freshwater from the local well. The company now treats hydrocarbon-contaminated water on site, allowing it to be recycled.

The company's plant in Saudi Arabia takes water from air-conditioning units in the same way using Project Mareotis. The collected water is filtered, stored, and used for pressure testing before being recovered for further use. The annual collection is around 720 cubic meters. Three units were operating at the time of the research, reducing the amount of desalinated water that needed to be brought in.

The company assessed facility adherence to standards, trained its employees, applied secondary containment, conducted regular inspections, and standardized chemical-handling procedures. In 2025, all of the company's material spills were contained at the source, and 85% did not reach soil or surface water.
