Water dependencyLow

Consolidated Edison, Inc. is a U.S. regulated utility company based in New York City that provides electric, gas, and steam services in New York City and nearby areas. Its steam system is a key source of heating and hot water for more than 1,500 commercial and residential customers across over 500 million square feet of Manhattan real estate. Because steam generation depends on large volumes of municipal water, water conservation, treatment, disposal, and system management are relevant to Con Edison's environmental performance.

The company's most significant water-related achievement has been the development of its steam system and water-treatment, disposal, and management programs, which have reduced water use by more than 15% over the last 10 years. Steam Operations centrally manages water use in relation to steam demand and continuously adjusts practices to improve water-use efficiency while maintaining water-demand protocols for drought-related restrictions.

The company is also researching technologies to create more circular water flows within the steam system. In 2024, at the East River Generating Station, Con Edison installed a Capacitive Electrodialysis Reversal pilot unit alongside its reverse osmosis system to potentially treat and reuse water previously sent to drain during treatment processes. The system could improve treated-water quality and reduce the volume of wastewater requiring disposal, although benefits from system commissioning, expected to be completed in 2025, are not included in H2Oversight's count of future water savings.
