Water dependencyHigh
EOG Resources, Inc. is an oil and natural gas exploration and production company headquartered in Houston, Texas, that operates in the United States. It uses water for drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and production, and generates produced water that must be transported, treated, reused, or disposed of.
EOG's Trident platform consolidates information about water availability, demand, storage, transportation, and reuse into a map that helps plan operations. It also incorporates data from WRI's Aqueduct project to identify areas of water scarcity, ensuring that water reuse and management decisions are based on local challenges rather than company-wide averages.
EOG uses its iDetect and miDetect software to automatically detect leaks and spills using sensors, operational data, and terrain information to monitor for potential leaks in the pipeline, reuse ponds, and gathering systems in real time. If a leak occurs, notifications are immediately sent to field personnel, and control rooms can remotely manage the flow, shutting down or rerouting where necessary. To further minimize the risk of spills, EOG employs double-lined storage, pond-level monitors, secondary containment, and continuous control room monitoring.
EOG has also invested in additional infrastructure to support reuse of produced water, including dual-purpose pipelines, reuse ponds, treatment facilities, and temporary water-transfer infrastructure. Pipelines rather than trucks allow water reuse to be more accessible and reduce risk of road accidents and spills. EOG has also increased mechanical evaporation technology in a single location to reduce the need for disposal of produced water in 2024.
EOG's Water Resources Team, headed by the Director of Water Resources, supervises every producing area to adopt a unique water management plan to reflect local water quality, quantity, infrastructure, and production requirements. As of 2024, every EOG location had some water reuse capabilities.
