Water dependencyModerate
Ford Motor Company is a U.S.-based automaker headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan. It designs and builds Ford and Lincoln cars, trucks, commercial vehicles, electric vehicles, and mobility products. Jim Farley is the CEO of Ford. Since Ford runs many manufacturing and supplier sites, water use is a moderately relevant part of its ESG performance.
Ford has increased water reuse and found alternative water sources at its factories, especially in water-scarce areas. The Irapuato Electric Power Center and Chihuahua Engine Facility now use no freshwater for manufacturing, relying on potable water only in rare cases. Twelve Ford plants use End-of-Pipe water reuse systems to recycle water after treatment. In 2025, Ford lowered its global freshwater use to 14.5 million cubic meters, down from 15.1 million in 2024. Since 2000, the company has reduced its annual water use by 77.1%. In 2025, Ford recycled 0.76 million cubic meters of water, which is 5% of its total freshwater use. The company also manages water discharge by requiring all sites to have permits and treat water before releasing it. If local rules are missing, Ford follows its own minimum standards.
Ford links its water efforts to local watershed health. Volunteers planted about 500 trees at the Irapuato Electric Power Center, Hermosillo Stamping & Assembly Plant, and Cuautitlán Stamping and Assembly Plant to help reduce rainwater runoff. In Marshall, Michigan, Ford supported another event where 60 trees were planted. Working with Living Lands & Waters, Ford also helped remove over 20,000 pounds of debris and waste from major rivers and watersheds, including cleanup at McKellar Lake in Memphis, near BlueOval City.
