Intel Corp.

Water dependencyVery High

Intel Corporation is a U.S.-based semiconductor company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It designs and manufactures processors, data-center chips, networking products, and other semiconductor technologies. Because chip fabrication depends on large volumes of clean water, Intel's water performance is closely tied to its manufacturing footprint.

Intel's most significant water achievement is attaining net positive water performance across its major operating regions. In 2024, Intel returned and restored 106% of its freshwater withdrawals through a combination of efficient water management, water reuse, municipal collaboration, and watershed restoration projects. Specifically, 8.8 billion gallons were returned and 2.9 billion gallons were restored, compared to 11.1 billion gallons of freshwater withdrawn. This represents a substantial surplus.

The company also conserved approximately 10.5 billion gallons of water in 2024. Since 2020, total water conservation has reached approximately 46.7 billion gallons, which, according to Intel, is sufficient to support roughly 430,000 U.S. homes for one year. In 2024, Intel maintained net positive water status in the United States, India, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

Intel's restoration work is spread across many watersheds. By the end of 2025, it had funded 48 water restoration projects. These projects restored about 2.937 billion gallons in 2024 and 2.851 billion gallons in 2025, with the largest 2025 benefits coming from Arizona, Oregon, California, New Mexico, Costa Rica, Mexico, India, and Malaysia.

A notable example in India is the Tyvakanahalli Lake Restoration project in Bengaluru. The lake, previously filled with silt and vegetation, had its storage function restored through the desilting of 9.39 acres and the planting of 1,300 trees around its perimeter. In 2025, the lake reached 60% of its capacity and restored an estimated 19 million gallons of water. The project resulted in increased groundwater recharge, enhanced biodiversity, and improved local water access.

Intel also supported the Penang Schools Water Saving Program in Malaysia. In 2025, CLEAN International installed water-saving features at 28 schools, including automatic push taps, faucet nozzles, and pressure reduction washers. The project restored nearly 6 million gallons of water in 2025. Student involvement contributed to the project's broader impact beyond hardware upgrades.
