Lyondell Basell
Water dependencyHigh
LyondellBasell is a global chemical and plastics manufacturer whose operations use water for temperature control, steam production, manufacturing processes, and sanitation. Because many facilities depend on rivers and other freshwater sources, effective water management is important to both production continuity and surrounding watersheds.
LyondellBasell's clearest water sustainability success in 2024 was reducing its overall operational water footprint. Total withdrawal declined from 279 million m3 in 2023 to 248 million m3 in 2024, an 11.1% reduction. Water consumption decreased from 117 million m3 to 110 million m3, while discharge fell from 162 million m3 to 138 million m3. Fresh surface-water withdrawal also declined from 131 million m3 to 121 million m3.
The company also completed a future water-stress assessment using WRI Aqueduct climate-scenario modeling. The analysis examined whether facilities currently considered low- or medium-risk could face higher future stress and found that the potentially exposed sites were consistent with the company's existing group of water-risk locations. Less than 0.1% of global water consumption occurred in high or extremely high water-risk areas, indicating limited present exposure while providing a structured basis for site-level risk management.
