Water dependencyLow
Pfizer is a U.S.-based pharmaceutical company headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1849 by Charles Pfizer and Charles Erhart, the company has grown into one of the world's largest biopharmaceutical firms. Pfizer develops and manufactures medicines, vaccines, oncology treatments, rare disease therapies, and other health products. Because pharmaceutical manufacturing, research laboratories, and global production sites require controlled water use, water management is a relevant part of its ESG performance.
In 2023, Pfizer completed water stress assessments for all its sites. In 2024, the company completed water risk assessments at several sites to develop a comprehensive understanding and analysis of water risk factors at the local level.
One of the examples of site-specific initiatives is an innovative clinical manufacturing facility in Ringaskiddy, Ireland. The facility received LEED Gold Certification and is designed to minimize the consumption of natural resources by reusing water and energy. Harvested rainwater is used to flush the toilets, and renewable energy sources, combined with heat-recovery systems, are utilized. Besides, the project includes the restoration and enhancement of wetlands and habitats for the Cork Harbour Common Tern, an endangered tern species. It can be seen that Pfizer considers wildlife and biodiversity conservation and the protection of local ecosystems as part of its water stewardship strategy.
