SLB / Schlumberger

Water dependencyLow

SLB (formerly Schlumberger) is a global energy technology company providing services, equipment, digital solutions, and engineering to oil and gas and other energy customers. Water use is relevant through drilling, produced-water treatment, manufacturing, facilities, and client projects. Its water-stewardship strategy relies on operational water-risk assessments, recycling technologies, site water-conservation measures, and digital systems to enable water quality and efficiency improvements.

One of the company's biggest water success stories involves a closed-loop drilling water system, which used treatment and recycling during a client pilot to recycle more than 225,000 barrels of drilling water while maintaining the water quality required by clients. SLB estimates that its water-system approach saved more than 95% of water used, while saving more than 4.5 million barrels of water annually and preventing more than 15,000 tons of CO2e-equivalent emissions per year.

SLB has adopted a digital approach to produced-water-treatment equipment, including its Opti Site platform, which combines produced-water-treatment equipment, including VORTOIL hydrocyclones, with digital monitoring workflows that enhance treatment performance, regulatory compliance, and decision-making for offshore facility operations. At the corporate level, the company applies WRI's water-risk indicators to select priority locations and has developed water-use and water-movement protocols and facility standards that improve tracking consistency for water withdrawals. SLB has projects at facilities around the world, including in Abu Dhabi, where the company reduced freshwater withdrawal from its largest water-using facility by 15% in 2025.

Projects include pressure control systems, native landscaping, and more efficient water practices in Abu Dhabi, along with greywater recycling, wastewater recycling, rainwater harvesting, machining-water recycling, and more efficient water practices at other water-stressed sites. The company has continued collaborating with Greentown Labs on automated water-quality monitoring.
