Target Corp.

Water dependencyVery Low

Target Corporation is a U.S.-based multinational retailer with headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Its primary business is operating stores, e-commerce platforms, distribution centers, and controlled supply chains of apparel, home furnishings, and other goods. Because Target's water footprint is mostly connected to its product manufacturing, water stewardship is crucial for the company's operations and sustainability.

In 2024, Target's clothing production was water-efficient, with 94% of all garments, 97% of denim styles, and 93% of non-denim items using sustainable designs. Compared to traditional methods, the innovative denim washing technique reduced water consumption by 64% and decreased emissions by 70%. Overall, Target continues to lead from the front in water-related ESG performance by engaging with its textile suppliers to improve their water quality and processes through ZDHC, Apparel Impact Institute, and Clean by Design initiatives. Moreover, it is reported that 99% of the company's water use falls under its supply chain.

Target's sustainability report identified more than 830 stores, supply chain facilities, and corporate offices at risk of water stress. In addition, approximately 800 retail locations and 40 supply chain installations are exposed to stormwater hazards. In 2024, Target completed two rain gardens at its Woodbury, Minnesota, store, upgraded several outdated irrigation systems to smart controllers, and enhanced water treatment at around 170 sites.

The most significant problem is that even though 99% of the company's water use is connected to its supply chain, the company only accounts for water use in its facilities. Even though the sustainability report demonstrates good performance by value and percentage of reductions, it does not provide absolute numbers of water use, consumption, and discharge for its supply chain. Also, the company fails to explain how much water is saved due to more efficient denim production techniques.
