Water dependencyVery High
Texas Instruments Inc., headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is a U.S.-based semiconductor company that designs and manufactures analog chips, embedded processors, and other semiconductor products for industrial, automotive, personal electronics, and communications applications. Due to its wafer fabs and manufacturing sites, water reuse and wastewater management are critical to its ESG performance.
TI's most notable water sustainability achievement is its reuse initiatives at the Richardson, Texas wafer fab. As manufacturing expanded, particularly in 300mm wafer fabs in Texas and Utah, water demand rose. Despite this, TI improved its reuse performance, reusing 14,383 megaliters of water in 2025 and increasing its reuse rate from 31% in 2024 to 35% in 2025.
The Richardson site demonstrates how TI reduced freshwater demand in manufacturing. The company implemented projects to lower water intake and increase reuse, including wastewater reuse infrastructure and treatment upgrades. These scalable systems support manufacturing growth and deliver substantial, lasting improvements.
TI also implemented several practical water initiatives across its sites. The company optimized deionized water plants to enhance reverse-osmosis recovery, improved flow rates to reduce water use in manufacturing tools, redirected condensate and reuse water to cooling towers, and recycled high-quality production water into ultrapure water systems where feasible. These technical measures are where most semiconductor water savings occur.
In 2025, TI's water-reduction and reuse projects saved 4,263 megaliters of water, equivalent to approximately 16% of its 2024 water withdrawals. Conservation efforts were nearly four times higher than in previous years, driven by larger water-reduction and reuse projects. Although overall water use increased due to expanded production, reuse initiatives helped offset this rise.
TI also treated and reused wastewater at its manufacturing facilities. Its programs cover wastewater discharge, stormwater pollution prevention, site compliance, solvents, metals, pH, temperature, and suspended solids. Where feasible, TI recovers solvents, metals, and select acids for reuse in manufacturing. This is water stewardship next to materials recovery.
TI also supported a community project in Bangalore, India, where volunteers helped improve school sanitation facilities and install water purification systems. While smaller in scale than manufacturing initiatives, this effort links TI's water stewardship to healthier learning environments.
