The Boeing Company

Water dependencyLow

The Boeing Company, a U.S.-headquartered aerospace manufacturer of commercial planes, defense systems, spacecraft, satellites, and related items, uses water for products and services, industrial processes, facility maintenance, sanitation, and remediation. The company's water footprint includes water use for manufacturing, research, and testing as well as facility operations, which include large manufacturing, testing, maintenance, and research centers that need water for processes, cooling, and sanitation. Contamination management is included as a sustainability-related domain.

The Boeing Company contributed to the cleanup and restoration of the Lower Duwamish Waterway, a Superfund site in Seattle, along with the City of Seattle and King County. The Superfund project is addressing sediment contamination and involves dredging, capping, placement of clean sand, and monitored natural recovery to protect riverine ecosystems and humans from PCB contamination that was historically released by Boeing's manufacturing activities. The Lower Duwamish system has improved overall water quality, and in 2015 PCB levels in the entire waterway had declined by about 50% from the time historical industrial activities were underway.

Completion of the cleanup at the Boeing Santa Susana Field Laboratory in California included responding to legacy contamination in groundwater, stormwater, and soil, as well as securing nearly 2,400 acres of open space in perpetuity. However, neither indicator is comparable to other companies in this index because the former solely addresses past pollution, while the latter is unrelated to freshwater use.

Boeing's reported water withdrawal increased by around 12% from 2024, while reuse of reclaimed water dropped from 37.2 to 28.1 ML. The company also increased withdrawals from water-scarce regions. Furthermore, the reported water data covers only around 76% of operations by square footage.
