Uber

Water dependencyVery Low

Uber Technologies Inc. is a global technology company best known for its ride-hailing, food-delivery, and freight services. Uber's direct water footprint derives primarily from its offices and other locations, not the travel of its cars per se, which are driven by third-party drivers.

The company reports water use intensity relative to organization size using metrics based on the number of employees and net revenue, as well as water use per square meter of area served.

Uber's top water sustainability success was a 5% decrease in total water use, from 845,772 m³ in 2021 to 802,348 m³ in 2022. Efficiency, however, improved by a larger amount than total water use. The company's use per square meter of land decreased by around 19%, use per employee per square meter decreased by around 38%, and revenue-normalized intensity decreased by around 48%, from 48.45 to 25.17 m³/USD 1m revenue. Water use intensity in high and extremely high water-stress areas was 7.79%.

The share of water use in areas characterized as high and extremely high water stress increased from 3.53% to 6.21%, but the report does not discuss specific water-conservation projects or relate gains in efficiency to business operational changes or changes in scale.
