Water dependencyModerate
Walt Disney is a media and entertainment company headquartered in Burbank, California. The company is known for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, ESPN, ABC, Disney+, Hulu, and its global theme parks and resorts. Its business includes film and television production, streaming, sports media, theme parks, cruise lines, consumer products, and live entertainment. CEO Josh D'Amaro leads the company.
Walt Disney's strongest completed water sustainability achievement is its water reuse system at Shanghai Disney Resort. The resort recycles treated water from Wishing Star Lake for non-potable uses. Disney also completed restroom renovations that allow treated lake water to supply restroom systems. This saves more than 73 million gallons of potable water each year, about 276,000 cubic meters. This is a strong example because Disney reduces reliance on municipal potable water by turning an existing resort water source into a reusable operational resource.
Disney also improved water self-sufficiency in its cruise operations. In 2025, the Disney Treasure launched with an onboard reverse osmosis system that can produce nearly all the ship's potable water. Disney also upgraded the Disney Dream's reverse osmosis system, allowing the ship to meet nearly all its potable water needs at sea. These systems reduce the need to source water from port communities. Disney completed water-focused grant investments across all eight key sites, including global parks and resorts, cruise line operations, the Burbank corporate campus, and Aulani in Hawaii.
At Disneyland Resort, Disney worked with the Orange County Conservation Corps to construct two vegetated stormwater channels. These channels capture and filter stormwater runoff, reduce urban flooding, improve water quality, and help replenish local groundwater. Disney also supported water resilience through research and production practices. In Hong Kong, Disney worked with The Nature Conservancy and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to develop a flood mitigation model that simulates storm surge and rainfall scenarios to identify flood-risk areas and test nature-based solutions. In film production, the Whalefall crew conserved 20,000 gallons of water from production tanks by donating it to a Los Angeles initiative focused on urban forestry, stormwater management, and watershed protection.
